Getting Children Started

Whenever a child walks into a room, I feel like bowing, because I don't know what great person I might be in presence of.— Goethe

I share similar sentiments when I begin to teach a child how to swim. I feel deeply fortunate to be in the position of teaching something I love to others. It is from this place I approach each student.

Swimming can be a lifelong skill so it is important that one's early experience be positive and successful. I also place a high priority on instilling thru experience both a respect (for safety reasons) and a love of the water (for pure enjoyment).

I start with learning about a child's background to prepare myself for dealing with any obstacles (past problems with ear infections, blocked nasal passages, trauma, difficult birth, etc.)

I start off teaching balance, survival skills, and proper breathing techniques. I also teach ordinary skills such as entering and exiting a pool. I teach all four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke). Some children don't know instinctively how to play in the water so I will teach that as well.

I also work on building endurance and, eventually, speed. To support this, I help children develop their body awareness, to discover their physical strengths and to feel the power in their bodies.

Swimming lessons also offer the opportunity to learn life skills such as: learning to follow instructions; ability to focus; risk-taking; and discipline.

On the level of personal character, I also assess and support the development of specific qualities each individual might have the opportunity to develop during the course of learning to swim – for example: confidence; trust ( in oneself in others); independence; acceptance; letting go; and playfulness.

Beth now offers open water swimming instruction and support with sea kayak – now available for long-distance swims. Click here for further information.

We started swimming with Beth because of our frustration with group lessons at the Rec Center. We are a family who spends a great deal of time around the water, and a mother who is an ex-swimmer and coach. It was very important to us for our children to be strong, confident swimmers.

Beth's strengths as a teacher include her strong stroke knowledge, ability to teach the strokes, and correct any mistakes or bad habits that kids may have. She takes each stroke and breaks it down into small pieces, and then puts it all back together when the swimmer is ready. Beth has tremendous patience with kids and develops a strong rapport with them and their families.

Both of our kids were beginning swimmers when they started with Beth and are now both active on a competitive swim team. Christopher placed sixth in districts for the 25m breaststroke.

We would highly recommend Beth to anyone for swim instruction. We have recommended her to our family and friends. She is a very caring and giving teacher. Anyone can see how much she loves her job.

— Steve and Ann Apple

Nathalie & Anna Hall, ages 13 & 9.

Nathalie has been swimming approx. 3 years, 2 with Beth. Anna has been swimming approx 3 years, all with Beth.

We started out planning to give our daughter just one semester of one-on-one swim lessons with Beth to get her started swimming. It was such a positive, successful experience that not only did she continue with lessons, we also started our other daughter in lessons too. Several years later, it's hard to imaging stopping; both girls adore their lessons! Swimming with Beth has become a highlight in their week.

Beth is truly an amazing teacher and she has an incredible amount of patience with kids. She is a natural teacher who seems so comfortable and confident with everything she does with her students. Our daughters are not only learning to swim, they are also learning so much about their bodies. Body awareness is so important in most activities and sports, but not usually taught alongside the skills.

Beth teaches with such precision that even though our daughters are not "natural athletes" they are learning to be such confident and competent swimmers, swimming with precision I never dreamed they would acquire.

Though our daughters are not on a swim team and probably won't ever be on one, swimming has become an integral part of their lives, and we have Beth to thank for that!

— Mary Hall

Although Marya had had swimming lessons before, at four she was still reluctant to jump into a pool or put her face in the water. Beth has given Marya a lot of confidence and encouragement, and after fewer than 10 lessons she is now so at ease in the water.

Marya has dived head first into the water, has the beginning of a crawl stroke, and enjoys jumping off the diving board. She now really enjoys swimming and playing in the water!
